Suffering from a Verrucae?
A verrucae is a viral infection infecting the skin cells on the soles of the feet called the Human Papilloma Virus. The virus is usually caught in areas that are warm and moist such as swimming pools, changing rooms and communal showers.
The slightly abrasive non slip tiles in these environments hold the verrucae virus and when walked on feet can pick up verrucae cells particularly if the skin on the foot is cut or scratched allowing the viral cells to enter the skin. People of all ages can catch a verrucae.
The appearance of a verrucae varies, they can be flat or raised, normal skin colour or slightly yellow due to the build up of hard skin. The may or may not contain small black dots which are small blood vessels drawn up to the surface of the skin.
Reasons to treat a verrucae
Verrucae are harmless. However, they can spread and in some cases be painful as hard skin forms. People may want to treat them because they find them unsightly, are concerned they will spread or just don’t like the thought of having a virus on their foot.
A podiatrist is helpful when home treatment or over the counter products aren’t working, or the verrucae is painful, when there are several, or you have a medical condition that prevents you using over the counter products.
